Q2) Areas of success

Q2) Areas of success

In terms of what we did well, we were not too harsh on ourselves in the sense that we feel we did well.
We feel that we got post production and the editing elements correct. For example, we spent a fair amount of time making sure we got the music on our task correct. Along with this, we had to make sure that we had evry shot at an exact duration and make sure that it did not go on for too long and bore the audience. This is something that we feel we did quite well on.
Another element that we feel we did quite well on was our shots and angles. We feel that we got in every shot that we needed to : 180 degree rule
                                                 Shot/Reverse shot
                                                 Match on Action
We didn't really struggle to get these shots in, as we planned our filming very well, which brings me on to storyboarding...
Storyboarding was very new to myself and Kieran, but we feel that it was no trouble whatsoever and we actually enjoyed it.
These are things that my group feel we did well!

1) What have you learned during the making of your preliminary task?

1) What have you learned during the making of your preliminary task?

What we've learned.

While working on this preliminary task, I have learnt many things.
One of these things is how to use continuity correctly and effectively. Myself and my group initially made a large continuity error but we have redeemed this error and now we know how to improve this aspect for our real task.
We didn't struggle with time, as we planned a very organised schedule for filming and computer work so that our work didn't collide with each other and we came to every lesson knowing what we needed to do.
My group consisted of only two, myself and Kieran. I feel that our ideas contributed to make a decent piece of media and we very rarely disagreed on something. This is something that I feel was a strength of our work. We both had different jobs that reflected what we were good at and what we were not so good at. This got the best out of us.
These are the main things that we learned during the production of our preliminary task.

Preliminary task storyboard

This is our preliminary task storyboard, which contains images and captions for each shot we plan to film in our preliminary task. This contains the 180 degree rule, the match on action shot, and the shot/reverse shot. These are all used in our preliminary task amongst other techniques and camera angles.
Below the presentation are notes on what each slide is and is meant for.
Media Preliminary Storyboard from jonjomurtagh5799

1) The first shot in our storyboard is a long shot of character 1 (Dan) in the setting of the scene> He has the scenery in the background to give the shot an establishment feel to it.

2) The second shot is the use of match on action. We use this to show character 2 (Kieran) going through the door to meet Dan.

3) The third shot in our storyboard is a mid shot of Kieran with what appears to be an object in his hand. This shot allows the audience to focus both on the character and the item he possesses.

4) Shot 4 is an Over The Shoulder shot from Kieran's point of view, looking straight towards dan.

5) This is the follow up shot, as the same is done from Dan's perspective and this could be described as a shot/reverse shot.

6) This shot is an extreme close up of Kieran's hand, and in particular, the object. This is so that the audience can identify the object in his hand. They will then discover that the item in his hand is money.

7) This is a long shot of both characters sat on the bench outside. This is the first time that the audience can see the front of both characters.

8) This shot is another extreme close up, as it captures the most important part of the scene. It captures the exchange of objects between the two characters, and shows it clearly.

9) The next shot is captured directly after the previous one, and is just a long shot of the item exchange between the two characters. It is important to note that neither character looks at each other, which allows the audience to understand that what is being done is private.

10) The next shot should be ignored as it is not something that will be used.

11) The penultimate shot of the storyboard is an Over The Shoulder shot from behind the head of character 1. This shows the item which character 1 had once possessed is now in the hands of character 2.

12) The final shot is character 2 walking away from the scene, as the camera pans to capture the whole setting.

For our upcoming preliminary task, we must create and edit a short film segment in and around school. We are considering filming in the sixth form area, as there a lots of professional settings could use, such as the staff offices. I think that these are very good and suitable settings as our movie segment is set in the school, and the staff area was always a scary thought as a child.

Match on Action

Match on action is a technique that is used in many sorts of Tv and media productions. It consists of connecting two shots together in which a character finishes an action that was started in the first one. For example a clip of a character walking through a door from one angle, followed by a shot from another from another angle.

180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree rule is a rule that means a camera can only stay one side of a certain line where the characters are being filmed. There are three positions that the camera can be in, and this is so that the viewer is not confused or disorientated by the cameraman. This is very important otherwise it will reduce the quality of the program.

Shot/Reverse shot

A shot reverse shot is used in the media usually to show a conversation between two characters, enabling the viewer to see the conversation from both of the characters perspective, enhancing the viewers experience whilst watching the program.

Camera shots

My task was to create pictures from certain camera angles that are commonly used in the media. This is my presentation, which contains pictures of my group performing a storyline which is a bully beating up his chosen victim.

My First Media Blog

Hello, I am Jonjo Murtagh and this is the first post on my blog. This is about something I have recently done which in this case was return to school to complete my first week of sixth form. I was a mixture of both nervousness and excitement when it came to the first day, and was looking forward to what the week may bring. All my worries we're put aside very early into the week.
I chose Media studies as I am interested in the media and things such as TV, the music industry and Movies. This was the best subject to suit my interests, and Media, from what ive heard, is a very interesting subject. Media has always been something I wanted to do and hopefully I will enjoy my time in this class!
